STRONG PROMOTION IN THAILAND'S DISCOUNT STORE: WHO WIN?

The first volley in the retail competition between Big C and Tesco Lotus has been launched, with the UK chain now accepting the cash coupons of its archrival operator.

The Carrefour hypermarket chain last Friday kicked off a joint promotion with Big C Supercenter that allows customers to use cash coupons at either outlet.

Carrefour now belongs to Big C after Groupe Casino, the French retail group, acquired the 42 local branches last November.

The Carrefour cash coupons can be used until tomorrow with any purchase of 400 baht or more and a maximum of five coupons per bill.

However, early this week Tesco Lotus moved to counter the Carrefour campaign by announcing it will accept Carrefour cash coupons at its stores and doubling the face value.

Each 80-baht coupon will be worth 160 baht at Tesco Lotus and can be used until Friday. The minimum purchase is 600 baht.

A marketing expert said the Big C-Tesco competition will only grow more intense.

"Both hypermarket chains will try every means to attract shoppers," said the expert.
