CARREFOUR UNVEILS NEW PLANET

In order to offer customers a new shopping experience centred around making purchases in comfort, friendliness and fun, Carrefour has developed a new hypermarket concept – Carrefour Planet. With two pilot stores in Ecully and Venissieux in France, Carrefour Planet opened its doors to its first customers on August 25.

The new concept stores boast a festive atmosphere of discovery, specialist offers organised into key areas, lower prices, brand new services and new technologies. The format has a range of products that have been completely rethought out and organised into key areas:
The Market Area offers a varied range of extremely fresh products, cooking lessons, an expanded delicatessen area, freshly cut fruit and vegetables or sushi being prepared.

The Organic Area has a wide variety of organic products – Carrefour brands as well as other specialist brands. Tastings are held on a regular basis and discounted prices are offered so that everybody can enjoy organic products.

The Frozen Food Area offers an extremely wide range of frozen products, reworked customer flows with an offering that is organised into different areas that follow the order of a traditional meal, closed freezers for greater comfort and cooking demonstrations.

The Beauty Area has been given a complete makeover for the well-being of customers. They can purchase their beauty products at a leisurely pace and get expert advice, as well as enjoy services such as rapid make-up applications and express hairstyling. Among the other innovations is a virtual mirror, which customers can use to test make-up products ‘live’ at interactive terminals.

The Fashion Area, reorganised to include the whole world of fashion, showcases new collections and provides a new range of services, including free advice and alterations.

The Baby Area brings together everything new parents need, from food products to nappies, as well as pushchairs, clothing and furniture. Mothers can enjoy access to a free birth list service and have their more bulky shopping carried for free, as well as benefit from the advice of a paediatric specialist.

The House Area is split into four sections – Kitchen and Table, Home Deco, Practical Home and Home Accessories – with a whole new selection and many colour-coded ranges.

The Leisure-Multimedia Area brings together the culture and multimedia areas, organised according to the brand. All latest technologies are showcased, including 3D TV, touchscreen tablet computers and e-books. A whole new digital store has been created offering customers the opportunity to sign up for digital subscriptions and services, as well as a completely dedicated Apple area.

For certain categories, exclusive partnerships with major brands mean that customers can discover a new offer: for instance, Virgin will have a wide selection of cultural products in the Vénissieux store; Réserves Naturelles will have its own dedicated area in the beauty world for make-up, accessories and costume jewellery.

Carrefour Planet stores also have a new area – of almost 2,000 sq.mt in size – dedicated to Season and Events.

BJC EYES CARREFOUR PARTNER

Berli Jucker Plc (BJC), the SET-listed trading company, may seek partners to join in the bidding for Carrefour's business operation in Thailand.

The company is considering using bank loans, raising equity or business partnerships to support the bid, said corporate finance manager Dusanee Therteppitak.

BJC's bid for the French hypermarket chain's assets worth 16 billion baht will help complete its consumer supply chain business.

"We're studying how we can improve Carrefour's profitability. Although we have no experience in the hypermarket business, we have one key success factor that modern trade should have. This factor is location and our shareholder, TCC Group, is very strong in this area," she said.

BJC has not heard anything new from Carrefour and bidding details and schedules rely on Carrefour's timetable.
Miss Dusanee said BJC was also considering other channels such as convenience stores and discount stores to complete a consumer supply chain business that would reach more customers.

To finance the deal, Kittipong Rattanachaisit, assistant vice-president of BJC, said the company could acquire additional bank loans or leverage debt burdens up to 16 billion baht. It can also raise equity if debt financing does not provide enough.

As of June 30, its interest-bearing debt-to-equity ratio was 0.38 times and liability to equity at 0.81%. The company can increase its D/E ratio to 1.75 times under an obligation to bondholders that the company recently issued worth 4.56 billion baht.

For the first half of this year, the company reported sales of 12.27 billion baht, up 10.1% year-on-year. Net profit rose by 107% to 994 million baht.

The industrial supply chain business contributed 49% of total sales after its recent acquisition of additional glass factories. The consumer supply chain business contributed 31%, healthcare and technical products contributed 17%, and others 3%.

Mr Kittipong is confident operating results in the second half will meet their target.

BJC shares closed yesterday on the SET at 18 baht, up 60 satang, in trade worth 222 million baht.

CARREFOUR WILL QUIT MALAYSIA: Said Minister

Kuala Lumpur. French retail giant Carrefour plans to sell its business in Malaysia, a minister said, amid speculation the company will also offload its stores in Singapore and Thailand.

“We heard Carrefour is considering divesting. It is for the purpose of rationalizing their overseas business,” Deputy Trade Minister Mukhriz Mahathir said , adding that other hypermarkets were “keen to take over” Carrefour’s 23 stores in Malaysia. “There are many suitors,” he said.
Low Ngai Yuen, Carrefour’s marketing and communications director, declined to respond to the comments, but Yeah Kim Leng, group chief economist with financial research company RAM Holdings, said Carrefour’s impending departure from Southeast Asia had been well flagged.

“The news has been around for some time. It is an open secret that Carrefour wants to pull out from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. They’ve put feelers out to the industry on their plan,” he said.

Carrefour wanted to consolidate its business and concentrate on the booming Indian market, he said. “It is not surprising for them to move to India. The middle-class segment is a large expanding group,” he said.

Carrefour subsidiary Carrefour Indonesia in July said it remained committed to Indonesia. That followed reports in May that Trans Corp., a unit of Para Group, was seeking to acquire 100 percent of Carrefour Indonesia. Trans Corp., which bought a 40 percent stake in Carrefour Indonesia this year, later denied the reports.

The New Straits Times newspaper last month reported that Carrefour had put a $1 billion collective tag on its business in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Yeah said the “competitive” hypermarket industry in Malaysia remained profitable. “Given the growth potential in the region, we will likely see other players buying Carrefour. Players that exit will be able to find suitors.”

Players in the Malaysian market who are possible buyers include Britain’s Tesco, Japan’s Jusco, and Giant, which is owned by the Dairy Farm group.

CARREFOUR READIES FOR HYPERMARKET REVAMP

Carrefour is getting ready to unveil two new hypermarkets, as part of its plans to revive its struggling operations across Europe, with CEO Lars Olofsson calling the current concept “a thing of the past”. The retail giant will open the hypermarkets tomorrow (24 August) in Lyon, with Olofsson noting that “some departments will go, some will merge and we will introduce some new ones”.Olofsson said the changes had to be made at the hypermarkets, noting “The concept of having everything under one roof in a bazaar-like spirit is a thing of the past”. He added that the new-look hypermarkets will focus on areas in which Carrefour is competitive in prices, such as textiles, home decor and groceries.

Carrefour plans to invest nearly E1bn over the next three years on revamping its European hypermarkets, which represent half of its sales. Olofsson noted that despite the troubles, Carrefour has increased its market share in France by 1% to 24% this year.

TESCO LAUNCHES DRIVE-THRU

Tesco has today launched Britain’s first supermarket shopping ‘drive-thru’ service at one of its store’s in Hertfordshire.

Under the new scheme, which has been introduced at the group's Tesco Extra store in Baldock, customers order and pay for their goods online, but unlike other internet shoppers they choose the Click and Collect option which allows them to book a two-hour collection slot.
They then pay £2 fee for a reserved area in the store’s car park where they drive to, to have their pre-packed shopping loaded into their car by a member of staff.

If successful, the first of its kind service could be rolled out to other Tesco stores across the country.

Laura Wade-Gery, chief executive of Tesco Direct and Tesco.com, said: "This will be especially popular with busy mums who have the school run and children's activities to manage."

"It also offers a solution to parents who want to avoid the challenge of shopping in a busy store with children in tow but can't afford the time to stay in for the shop to arrive to their door."

"We also expect it to help young professionals who want the convenience of a pre-picked and packed shop but who cannot commit to waiting at home for delivery. They can collect their shop on their way home from work or at any other time that suits them during our extensive collection hours."

PTT may pursue Carrefour

right: Mr.Prasert Bunsumpun President and Chief Executive Officer, PTT Plc.

PTT Plc, Thailand's largest energy business, confirmed yesterday that it was among six interested bidders for the assets of the French retailer Carrefour in Thailand, saying it might benefit the group's retail oil business.

Prasert Bunsumpun, the president and CEO of PTT, surprised analysts in a meeting on Thursday night by revealing the company might diversify into the retail business through Carrefour hypermarkets. The Thai assets are estimated to be worth about US$600 million or 19 billion baht.

When Carrefour announced some of its Southeast Asian assets were for sale two months ago, the interested bidders in the Thai operation were rumoured to include Berli Jucker (BJC), Tesco Lotus, Saha Group and Big C. However, PTT is only the second company after BJC to confirm its interest.
Mr Prasert said that even though PTT was an energy company, retail sales were not "too far" from its core business.

"We don't want to be Central [Department Store], but as an oil company we can do a lot more than you would imagine if you are open to it. The trend in Europe and England is for petrol dispensers providing service to motorists at Carrefour hypermarkets. So couldn't that be possible here?" he asked rhetorically.

When Carrefour put fuel pumps at its hypermarkets, it drove up sales of both the stores and of fuel, he said.

"If we were talking about running hotels, sure that may be impossible, but not for a retail business. Do you know some casinos are run inside petrol stations? This is not the first time we considered working with retail, as long ago we asked Big C whether it would be possible to open a petrol service inside their stores, but received no response," said Mr Prasert.

"We believe we could create synergies with PTT's retail oil operations with Carrefour. Of course, it would not become our core business if we buy it."

Mr Prasert admitted the success rate of its bid was lower than 5%, and that competition in the retail arena, where PTT lacks experience, is fierce.

A final decision on whether PTT will bid has not been made, but it is studying details.

Analysts expressed doubts about how much the acquisition would benefit PTT's existing businesses.

"I think it is likely a done deal," said Sutthichai Kumworachai, an analyst at KGI Securities. "But there is still a big question about how much this helps the company. PTT does not have any expertise in this business at all."

An analyst from Globlex Securities said the synergies between Carrefour and PTT would not be significant and the likelihood of a deal was minimal given the competition from other interested bidders with more retail expertise. Also, the return on investment from the assets would not be high, he added.

A source from CP All Plc, the local operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores that are located in many PTT stations, said it was possible that PTT would successfully buy Carrefour in Thailand because PTT had earlier expanded its retail business by taking over Jiffy and Jet stores.

PTT is a cash-rich company, and those liquid assets could provide some of the money needed to acquire Carrefour, while the hypermarket in France has operated fuel stations allowing for synergy, the source said.

Shares of PTT closed unchanged yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 266 baht in trade worth 1.85 billion baht.

UPDATE 1-PTT may bid for Carrefour's $600 mln Thai assets

Looking at opportunity in non-oil business

BANGKOK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - PTT Pcl (PTT.BK), Thailand's biggest energy company, said on Friday it plans to bid for French retailer Carrefour's (CARR.PA) Thai assets, worth an estimated $600 million, under a plan to diversify its businesses.

Carrefour, Europe's top retailer, wants to sell its Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand units at a potential price of $1 billion to focus on core markets where it holds leading positions. [ID:nTOE66407H]

In recent years, Carrefour has withdrawn from other Asian markets, including Japan and South Korea, to focus on growing markets such as China and India.

"We are actually interested to see whether there's an opportunity to link to our businesses," Chief Financial Officer Tevin Vongvanich told Reuters.

"We are studying the plan, but there are no further details or information on the timing at this point," Tevin said.
PTT joins an increasingly crowded field expected to bid for the assets in September.

France's Casino (CASP.PA) has hired Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS.L) to advise it on a potential bid for Carrefour's Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand assets, two sources told Reuters in July.

Leading Thai conglomerate Berli Jucker Pcl (BJC.BK), owned by liquor tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhadi, expressed interest last month in bidding for Carrefour's Southeast Asian operations.

Singapore-listed Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd (DAIR.SI), which owns Cold Storage and Giant superstores in Singapore and Malaysia, and Britain's Tesco (TSCO.L) are also seen as potential bidders, sources said. Tesco and Dairy Farm have declined to comment.

Casino owns 36 percent of the Big C Supercentre chain, Thailand's second-largest hypermarket operator by number of stores after British-owned Tesco Lotus.

STRATEGIC FIT?

PTT Chief Executive Prasert Bunsumpun told analysts on Thursday PTT was studying whether to buy Carrefour's Thai assets.

Some industry analysts questioned whether buying Carrefour's Thai business would be a good fit for PTT, which already is in a partnership with CP ALL (CPALL.BK), operator of more than 5,000 7-Eleven convenient store branches in Thailand.

"We do not think it is a good idea. PTT does not have expertise in the wholesale business," Kasikorn Securities said in a note clients.

PTT, which also runs Jiffy convenient stores at its retail gas stations, is looking for assets overseas to boost growth and bolster its presence in international markets.

In Thailand, Carrefour has a market share of around 2 percent behind CP All, Tesco and Big C Supercenter (BIGC.BK), part-owned by France's Casino (CASP.PA), which are the top three retailers, according to RBS's recent research note.

Carrefour has 626 stores in Asia, with 424 in China alone. Of the rest, Indonesia has 76, Taiwan 65, Malaysia 19, Singapore two and Thailand 40, including 39 hypermarkets.

The Thai operations are expected to be valued at up to 19 billion baht ($603 million).

On Thursday, Big C said it was not involved in Casino's bid for Carrefour assets. ($1=31.51 Baht) (Editing by Jason Szep)

FEEL THE DIFFERENCE AT PARADISE PARK

Wal-Mart, Tesco May Be Welcomed by India Consumers, Survey Says

Left: People taking pictures of the inauguration function of the first Wal-Mart store in Amritsar

India’s consumers will probably welcome the entry of overseas retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Tesco Plc, according to a survey conducted by a management school.

Eighty four percent of respondents in a survey conducted in New Delhi by the Birla Institute of Management Technology said they supported allowing foreign direct investment in India’s retail industry. The Noida, Uttar Pradesh-based institute said it surveyed 660 people. It didn’t provide a margin of error.
The findings were submitted to the trade ministry, which had invited views. Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart is urging India’s government to lift curbs on the retail industry’s operations in the world’s second-most populous country. Total retail sales in India will grow from 16.3 trillion rupees ($350 billion) this year to 25 trillion rupees in 2014, Business Monitor International estimates.

“Customers are definitely going to benefit on price, and better quality of service,” said Kartik Dave, an associate professor at the management school.

Overseas companies are restricted to 51 percent ownership in single-brand outlets or 100 percent ownership in wholesale stores in India.

Wal-Mart may open “hundreds of stores” in India once the government allows foreign direct investment in the South Asian country’s retail industry, Raj Jain, managing director of the Bharti Group’s wholesale venture with Wal-Mart, said last month. The world’s biggest company has also said India’s inflation would slow by at least two percentage points should the government permit increased foreign investment in retail.

Carrefour SA has said it may opt for a franchise model in India.

Top retailers seek 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail

Left: Bharti Wal-Mart’s first cash-and-carry outlet, BestPrice Modern Wholesale, sets up shop in Amritsar

NEW DELHI: Two of the world's top retailers, Walmart and Carrefour, vying for a cut in India's organised retail pie, have asked the government to
allow up to 51 per cent foreign investment in multi-brand retail.

India allows 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in single-brand retail and 100 per cent FDI in cash-and-carry or wholesale trading. It has not allowed foreign companies to run multi-brand stores in India.

Walmart has partnered with the Bharti group to operate cash-and-carry wholesale stores and intends to continue the tie-up for multi-brand retailing.
"Bharti Walmart believes that FDI in multi-brand retail should absolutely be permitted, and ideally without any restrictions (i.e. fully open at 100 per cent)," the company said in a letter to the commerce ministry.

"Full opening of FDI in retail will create the conditions for the greatest flow of investment to the back-end with the related benefits for farmers, small businesses and consumers," it added.

Carrefour, which is also drawing up plans to roll out such wholesale formats, also supports a more relaxed foreign investment policy.

"Any cap or restrictions on FDI in this sector may result in potential loss of opportunities and avenues of inclusive growth of the retail sector," said Carrefour.

The Walmart and Carrefour views were in response to the the commerce ministry's recent move to solicit feedback on the subject.

"Should the government be of the view for staggered opening of the sector to FDI, the cap should be kept such that a foreign retailer is entitled to make a minimum of 51 per cent investment with rights to manage the company and bring about efficiency in the operations and induct the best industry practices," said Carrefour.

Both retailers recognised the fact that political pressure existed for not opening up the sector, but said the move would help tame inflation, build the back-end infrastructure and result in better prices for farmers.

Bharti Walmart said it was not in favour of having a fixed per centage of investment in back-end operations, one of the suggestions put forth by the government in the discussion paper, as it could turn out to be counter-productive.

"Given the state of the supply chain in India, much of the investment in the back-end will be up-front, particularly in the initial years. A fixed per centage of investment on the back-end could therefore lead to a misallocation of resources and take away from where they are most needed to create efficient supply chains," said Bharti Walmart.

"Any stipulation for minimum investment of any fixed per centage in the back end infrastructure, beyond what the foreign retailers are planning to do, will put undue and additional pressure on the profitability margin expected from the retail operations and negatively influence the viability of the operations," said Carrefour.

Allow 100 pc FDI in multi-brand retail: Carrefour to Govt

NEW DELHI: Promising to create a strong infrastructure and thousands of jobs in India, French retail major Carrefour has called for allowing 100 per cent FDI in multi-brand stores, and said that the move would ease inflationary pressures.

The government has taken a tentative step to open the politically sensitive sector, which employs 34 million people, to global players with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) releasing a discussion paper on the issue.

"Any cap or restriction on FDI in this sector may result in potential loss of opportunities and avenues of inclusive growth of the retail sector," Carrefour has said in its suggestions recently to the industry ministry.
It, however, said if the government wants staggered opening of the sector, the FDI cap should be kept such that a foreign retailer is "entitled to make a minimum of 51 per cent investment with rights to manage the company...".

The firm said each store of 50,000-60,000 sq ft sales area could provide about 200 direct and 250 indirect jobs.

"As per our estimates, if Carrefour starts its retail operations in India, in about 10 years, we would provide direct and indirect employment opportunities to approximately 20,000 people in the stores itself," the firm said.

While global players like USA's WalMart and German-Metro want the government to completely open the sector to foreign investments, Indian business chambers like Ficci and Assocham favour calibrated liberalisation.

India allows foreign investment only in single-brand retail, with FDI cap of 51 per cent.

Carrefour said, "(FDI in multi-brand retail) will help in controlling the inflation rate by offering more competitive and rationalised prices of products to consumers and reduction of wastage across India's farm-to-fork supply chain," it said.

Inflation in India is hovering at about 10 per cent. The French firm said that improving supply chain and logistics will enable retailers to enhance overall competitiveness, decrease the prices offered to consumers and reduce wastage.

"Carrefour has plans to built appropriate back-end infrastructure to support the retail operations," it said.

The back-end infrastructure includes contract farming, local sourcing, cold chains and other logistic supports.

As per estimates, India loses fruits and vegetables worth thousands of crore rupees annually due to lack of proper cold chains and back-end infrastructure.

Worries of monopoly in Thailand Retail sector after Carrefour withdrawal

The Thai retail industry may have a better competitive edge if Big C Supercentre or Berli Jucker takes over the local operations of Carrefour. Otherwise, the industry will be monopolised in the near future if the French brand’s outlets are acquired by Tesco.

Currently, the retail business in Thailand is in effect an oligopoly, dominated by a few large companies. Retailers, therefore, have high bargaining power with suppliers. Although customers have enjoyed the resultant low-price policy of these retailers, consumers may suffer in the long run when the industry is dominated by only one retailer.
Carrefour, a French conglomerate and the world’s second-largest retailer, is planning to leave Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and is seeking offers for its units in these countries. Many companies have shown interest in taking over Carrefour’s outlets, of which there are now 41 in Thailand.

Central Retail Corp could be in the running to take over Carrefour’s hypermarket business in Thailand, estimated to be worth US$500 million (Bt16.2 billion) to $600 million, as the French retailer is seeking to dispose of its Southeast Asia assets.

Potential bidders are Big C, which is operated by the France-based Casino Group, and Tesco Lotus, a UK-based retailer and Thailand's largest retail entrepreneur. Berli Jucker is the only candidate that has never been involved in the retail business before. It is a manufacturing and trading conglomerate whose chairman is liquor tycoon Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.

An academic expert in the business said the retail business in Thailand was being challenged because of a lack of regulations governing the sector.

"Currently, retailers can open new businesses independent-|ly. Although there are some re-gulations such as the City Plan-ning Act and the Trade Competition Act, these laws do not forbid the aggressive expansion of the business nationwide," said the source.

Under the Trade Competition Act, if any enterprise has more than 75 per cent market share in an industry, it must split off |companies to prevent over-|dominance. However, in prac-|tical terms, those subsidiary |firms still belong to the mother company, which has full authority to instruct them to follow its policies. The act cannot prevent the expansion of the retail or any business.

Thailand now has too many retail outlets, in particular hypermarkets, compared with the population and density in each community.

"Carrefour has decided to move out of Thailand as it cannot compete in this unregulated environment. Carrefour has gradually expanded its business while some competitors have aggressively expanded, aiming to dominate the market," said the source.

According to a Commerce Ministry report, the incomes of the four retail giants have grown each year along with the rising numbers of new outlets. The income of Tesco Lotus is almost double that of its nearest competitors because it has the highest numbers of outlets. In 2008, the income of Tesco Lotus exceeded Bt130.06 billion, Big C had Bt76.51 billion, Makro had Bt73.18 billion, and Carrefour's income was Bt27.97 billion.

Jit Siratranont, a board member of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said the Thai retail industry was heading towards a monopoly as the government had not seriously enforced the Retail and Wholesale Business Act to regulate the business.

He expected to see only one or two large modern retailers in the future. As a result, Thai consumers would have limited choice, and would face high prices in the long run.

Jit added that because of the low bargaining power of Thai suppliers, they would be unable to refuse to pay high entrance fees to ensure that their products were sold at these large outlets.

A senior official at the Internal Trade Department said that if Berli Jucker took over Carrefour, it would be the best outcome for the retail industry. More competitors would be in the market to balance the bargaining power of other players.

Moreover, the Thai style of operation was better at compromising than foreign styles.

Right now, Thai consumers may not see any negative impact from the retail oligopoly, as they enjoy cheap goods. However, they will suffer in the long run as giant retailers gradually destroy rival Thai enterprises. Once a single giant retailer dominates the market, Thai consumers will pay the price.

According to the Internal Trade Department, the number of hypermarket stores in the Kingdom has increased considerably in the past decade, from only 65 outlets to 851. There are now 685 Tesco Lotus outlets, 78 Big C outlets, 41 Carrefour stores, and 47 Makro stores.

PTT AIMS FOR CARREFOUR BIDDING
