SUPPLIER SQUEEZED BY BIG C

The recent merger between the two giant hypermarket chains Big C and Carrefour is taking a toll on suppliers, who say they are facing tougher and possibly unreasonable trade conditions.

The mightier Big C is said to be flexing its muscles, demanding that its suppliers pay higher rates.
Representatives of Big C have told suppliers unofficially that if the fees they were paying to Carrefour and Big C were different, the higher rates would now apply.
Suppliers interviewed by the Bangkok Post said this practice was unfair because the character and positioning of Big C and Carrefour were different. They said Big C had also started to call for unreasonable demands and charges from suppliers.
The Big C chain, now with 113 branches, is now comparing Carrefour's contracts with suppliers with its own contracts. On an itemised basis, it is possible that the higher fee will be chosen.
For example, the fee charged for displaying products at the front of a shelf row is higher at Carrefour, so this rate could be applied to all suppliers at both chains.
But Carrefour charges lower fees for inclusion in the promotional brochures it mails out, so suppliers may end up paying the higher rate charged by Big C.

COMPETITION HEAT UP IN EASTERN BANGKOK

Retail competition in eastern Bangkok will grow more intense this year with major new marketing strategies by three giant retailers aimed at capturing demand and rising purchasing power in the area.

Siam Piwat Co, operator of the Paradise Park shopping complex on Srinakarin Road, has earmarked 50 million baht to spur demand at the retail complex with a special midnight sale from Jan 28-30.

Customers can receive discounts of 30-90% from 700 tenants.

The company is also arranging Chinese New Year campaigns at its two inner-city malls - Siam Discovery and Siam Center.

The combined campaigns are expected to see 4 billion baht circulate.

STRONG PROMOTION IN THAILAND'S DISCOUNT STORE: WHO WIN?

The first volley in the retail competition between Big C and Tesco Lotus has been launched, with the UK chain now accepting the cash coupons of its archrival operator.

The Carrefour hypermarket chain last Friday kicked off a joint promotion with Big C Supercenter that allows customers to use cash coupons at either outlet.

Carrefour now belongs to Big C after Groupe Casino, the French retail group, acquired the 42 local branches last November.

The Carrefour cash coupons can be used until tomorrow with any purchase of 400 baht or more and a maximum of five coupons per bill.

However, early this week Tesco Lotus moved to counter the Carrefour campaign by announcing it will accept Carrefour cash coupons at its stores and doubling the face value.

Each 80-baht coupon will be worth 160 baht at Tesco Lotus and can be used until Friday. The minimum purchase is 600 baht.

A marketing expert said the Big C-Tesco competition will only grow more intense.

"Both hypermarket chains will try every means to attract shoppers," said the expert.

WAL-MART LOOKS ABROAD FOR GROWTH

Over the past several months,  Wal-Mart's (WMT) stock has not enjoyed the same momentum shared by many of its retail peers. Wal-Mart, which closed around $56 per share on January 21, is up 12.3% since the end of August. That performance pales in comparison to the S&P Retail Index's astonishing 27.1% jump during the same period. Sluggish U.S. results have certainly played a role in weighing down Wal-Mart's stock price, as a weakened basic-needs consumer, and increased competition from dollar stores, have led to six consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines and only nominal operating margin expansion. However, we believe Wal-Mart's domestic troubles may be distracting from what could be one of retailing's more significant international growth stories.

Although we anticipate U.S. issues will eventually be resolved through merchandise mix adjustments and new store formats, Wal-Mart's international operations will likely be the company's primary growth engine going forward. This segment represents approximately 25% of Wal-Mart's revenue, and 21% of its operating income, and we expect it to average nearly 9% revenue growth annually, and generate more than one third of overall revenue over the next decade, compared with just above inflationary growth domestically (combining Wal-Mart U.S. and Sam's Club). Additionally, these estimates could prove to be conservative, as Wal-Mart has established footholds in several rapidly developing economies across the globe.

Ahold Outperforms Again in 4Q, but Stock Offers Little Upside; Carrefour, Delhaize Better Values

Photo http://www.raymondpeil.com
Ahold slightly undershot our revenue forecast in the fourth quarter, but robust same-store sales figures give us confidence in our 2011 projections and suggest our thesis--that Ahold's shrewd capital allocation should allow it to outperform its peers in the near term--remains intact. We are reiterating our fair value estimate, which implies limited upside to the stock.

After adjusting for exchange rates and an extra week in 2009, fourth-quarter 2010 net sales increased 5.5%. The company's domestic market of the Netherlands together with the Czech Republic and Slovakia were the key drivers, with identical sales growing 4.0% in these markets. The U.S. segment, which represented 80% of total net sales in the fourth quarter, was slightly less positive, with identical sales up 1.9%, or 0.9% excluding gasoline.
