CP ALL KEEN TO EXPAND ITS 7 ELEVEN EMPIRE ABROAD

Piyawat: China entry may take two years

CP All Plc, the local operator of 7-Eleven convenience stores, will proceed with expansion plans in China and Vietnam to aid long-term growth.

Last August, the company shelved the plan because it did not get a response from its parent firm after seeking licences to operate 7-Eleven stores in the two countries for two years.

Managing director Piyawat Titasattavorakul said the parent firm is exploring the business potential in each economic zone itself.

CP All has high potential to get licences to operate 7-Eleven stores in the southern part of China, as the company has showed strong business performance for many years. Moreover, the economy in the south of China is strong and licences are easily obtained.

"The final conclusion about licences in China will be known in the next two years," Mr Piyawat said.

BIG CHANGES IN CHINA CHALLENGE FRENCH RETAIL GIANT CARREFOUR

The world's second largest retailer, Carrefour, insists it is not pulling out of the massive Chinese market. Still, a closer look at the French company's struggles offers a window into how quickly things can change when doing big business in today's China.

BEIJING – “Big” is the operative word for both French-owned retail giant Carrefour, and the People’s Republic of China. So when rumors began circulating last month that Carrefour was planning to pull out of China and hand over its operations to the local China Resources Group conglomerate, it made some big waves.

Carrefour immediately denied the rumors, and the public relations spokesman of Carrefour China told the Economic Observer that the company will maintain its rhythm of opening 20 to 25 new branches per year.
Yet behind the rumor lies the truth that Carrefour China has seen much better days. Since July 2010, it has shut down six of its stores. One source close to Carrefour pointed out that the retailer has been suffering from severe staff turnover and increasing pressure on its cost control.

NEW CP BRAND STARTS IN CHINA

Consumers choose cakes at a bakery corner in the new Bazaar by Lotus store in Shanghai.

CP Lotus Corporation, a subsidiary of the Charoen Pokphand Group, has kicked off its first upscale retail food brand, Bazaar by Lotus, to cash in on rapid growth in Shanghai's retail industry.

Michael Ross, an executive vice-chairman, said China's most populous city grossed 800 billion baht in retail sales last year and saw 12.9% year-on-year growth in this year's first quarter.

The food centre, which debuted in Xintiandi Style luxury mall, is aimed at capturing the new generation of urban residents with high purchasing power, he said.

It is the newest retail format from the CP Group, which operates 73 CP Lotus Supermarkets on the mainland since opening the first one in Shanghai in 1997.

CARREFOUR IS LIKELY TO CLOSE ANOTHER 2 OUTLETS

Customers are shopping at a Carrefour SA supermarket in Haikou, Hainan province, during the Spring Festival. The company's two stores in Changchun, Jilin province, and Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, are likely to be shut down. Shi Yan / For China Daily

Retail giant Carrefour SA is likely to shut down another two stores in China, and experts attribute it to the French company's poor knowledge of local markets and the white-hot competition among retailers in second- and third-tier cities.

Insiders at a Carrefour store in Changchun, in Northeast China's Jilin province, said it has stopped purchasing and is waiting to hear from the China headquarters when it will close, China Business News reported on Tuesday. The store, the company's second in Changchun, occupies 8,000 square meters.

CARREFOUR, WALMART PRICING SCANDAL

Last month, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) fined three Carrefour stores in Shanghai, three in Hunan province, and two in Yunnan province up to 500,000 yuan each for overcharging customers. Walmart was also caught using illegal pricing methods.

According to a statement on the NDRC's website, there are four main ways the stores were cheating customers:
One method is by stating a fake original price when advertising sale items. The Carrefour Xinmin store in Changchun in northeastern China's Jilin Province sold men's underwear for 50.70 yuan, claiming the product was originally priced at 169 yuan when, in fact the actual original price was 119 yuan.

WAL-MART LOOKS ABROAD FOR GROWTH

Over the past several months,  Wal-Mart's (WMT) stock has not enjoyed the same momentum shared by many of its retail peers. Wal-Mart, which closed around $56 per share on January 21, is up 12.3% since the end of August. That performance pales in comparison to the S&P Retail Index's astonishing 27.1% jump during the same period. Sluggish U.S. results have certainly played a role in weighing down Wal-Mart's stock price, as a weakened basic-needs consumer, and increased competition from dollar stores, have led to six consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines and only nominal operating margin expansion. However, we believe Wal-Mart's domestic troubles may be distracting from what could be one of retailing's more significant international growth stories.

Although we anticipate U.S. issues will eventually be resolved through merchandise mix adjustments and new store formats, Wal-Mart's international operations will likely be the company's primary growth engine going forward. This segment represents approximately 25% of Wal-Mart's revenue, and 21% of its operating income, and we expect it to average nearly 9% revenue growth annually, and generate more than one third of overall revenue over the next decade, compared with just above inflationary growth domestically (combining Wal-Mart U.S. and Sam's Club). Additionally, these estimates could prove to be conservative, as Wal-Mart has established footholds in several rapidly developing economies across the globe.

TESCO AIMS TO QUADRUPLE CHINA REVENUE IN 5 YEARS

(Reuters) - Tesco (TSCO.L), the world's No.3 retailer, plans to quadruple revenue in China to about 4 billion pounds over the next five years by more than doubling its number of hypermarkets to more than 200.

The British group said on the second day of a trip with analysts to Asia that its expansion in China would deliver significant levels of profitability and returns, although it did not provide figures and target dates.

Tesco runs 82 hypermarkets and four "Lifespace" shopping malls stretching along eastern China.
A business of over 200 hypermarkets would be similar in size to Tesco's estate of largest "Extra" stores in its main British market, where it dominates the retail landscape.

CARREFOUR HITS ITS TARGET THROUGH ACQUISITION

Given the difficulty in finding good sites, is acquisition the way forward?

Carrefour in China
It looks like Carrefour has laid to rest rumours that it was poised to sell off its China business alongside the rest of its South East Asia operation.

These rumours come around every few years, usually along the lines that Carrefour needs to divest its international operations to focus on its core French business.

However, the French hypermarket giant has just acquired 51pc of Baolongcang, the Hebei-based operator and has said BLC's existing 11 hypermarkets will be made over and reopened in November.

That neatly lets Carrefour hit its target of 20 to 25 new stores in China each year, without having to find new sites and be held to ransom by property developers. The deal may signal a desire to move forward by acquisition, rather than just organic expansion.

However, Carrefour is still stuck far behind Wal-Mart, which has nearly twice as many outlets, and is nervously watching Tesco gain pace, now that the UK store has taken complete control of its former joint venture. It will be interesting to see how the Hebei stores perform - Carrefour has just closed a store in Xian and one of its stores in Henan is also thought to be struggling.
